Room for a View: A Song for Wintering
By Charles Wilkinson

“The only way out is through.” That is what I tell myself this time every year, because I am not a winter person. Weather is what we live with, so we have to take it as it comes – the blunt dark days, biting winds, blizzards, sub-zero temperatures, snow-and-ice-paralyzed cars, people walking like penguins.

For many of us winter is the enemy.  Driving can be treacherous, ice underfoot perilous, the flu debilitating at best. The good news is that winter is not forever. And that here this year it has been relatively kind – bitterly cold but practically snowless...thus far. Still, February can be cruel. The days ahead may need something more for “getting through.” Maybe a song might help.

 Sing A Winter Song

Sing, sing an anthem to another day;

a worshiping wonder at the soft spill of light

from out the chill darkness in the East,

 through tangles of limbs waiting, reaching for Spring.

 No birdsong to hear –

much too early in their shivering nests

for those who chose to stay.

 A spill of sunrise fills an almost hour

of an awakening, dream-shedding mind,

humming something of  a song

to fit and charm the sacred silence of the dawn.

A distant vein of silver

turning gold soon enough;

then a single bird’s chilly chirp.

Silhouetted trees, toss back dark curls,

looking for a brush of breeze

while stretching towards the glint of a new day,

rich with ageless rituals,

and becoming

 And the song is full.

Another new day

and warming toward

another new Spring.

Yes, winter has its charms and breath-mist beauty. But for me winter’s best gift is an appreciation for the other three seasons.
