More Room: The Mysteries of Existence

Modern science fools us into believing we can understand the world.

Not so.

Room for a View: Not Rolling Stones
“Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” is a song written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and released in 1972 by the singing group The Temptations.  “Papa was a rollin’ stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home …”  As the title and lyrics suggest, the father in this song was not committed to one family or one relationship. The fathers noted in the paragraphs below are not rolling stones.

Room for a View: Time-Line
A good and special friend, celebrating his 80th birthday at a family dinner, loudly asked me across the table what it was like “being an octogenarian.” I was not expecting his question and replied tersely, “I am grateful every day.” He was disappointed that I did not say more and, in retrospect, I was as well. Room for a View: 'Keep Hope Alive'
I am sure that many readers are familiar with the story “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75, Denmark), but I will still give a brief summary of the tale: Two weavers promise “a vain emperor who cares about nothing except wearing and displaying clothes” that they will weave a suit of clothes for him that is “invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid or incompetent.

Room for a View: Trumping Trump
What is happening in Washington these days is unsettling, to say the least. Our president’s unpredictability is shaking up the system. His apolitical and businessman’s attempt at a government makeover is wrapping our already tight nation and the world even tighter.
