In a statement posted on her Facebook page yesterday and sent to the RoundTable today, March 25, Lee Cabot said she did not know anyone from A Better Evanston and could not accept its endorsement.

About 75 people attended a candidate forum sponsored by the Organization for Positive Action and Leadership (OPAL) at Chute Middle School on Jan. 31. As part of the forum, the two candidates for Ninth Ward Alderman, Cicely Fleming and Shawn Jones, were asked questions about their priorities, equity, traffic, school funding and pensions, term limits, and helping immigrants.

Two forums held earlier this month helped sort out the differences among the five candidates for Mayor of Evanston: Gary Gaspard, Steve Hagerty, Alderman Brian Miller, Jeff Smith, and Alderman Mark Tendam. All five attended the forum on Feb. 4 held at the Civic Center and sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Evanston (LWVE). Three attended a forum at Haven Middle School on Feb. 9, sponsored by the Central Street Neighbors Association (CSNA).

Editorial: We Support the District 65 Referendum
The District 65 School Board placed a $14.5 million operating referendum on the ballot for the April 4 election. If the referendum is approved, the District will be permitted to increase its property tax levy by approximately $14.5 million per year. The School Board decided to put the referendum on the ballot after several years of extensive and careful consideration. We think the plan represents a thoughtful way to address the District’s financial position. We support it for three distinct reasons.

Third Ward Candidates Speak at OPAL Forum
The three candidates for Third Ward Alderman, and one of the two candidates for City Clerk attended. Melissa Wynne is seeking re-election for a fourth term as Alderman of the Third Ward. Alex Block and Alex Morgan have challenged her. Devon Reid is running for City Clerk. Incumbent Rodney Greene told the RoundTable he was not able to attend the forum because of a previous engagement.

Differing Outcomes for the Feb. 28 Primaries
The two candidates for Mayor who receive the highest number of votes in the Feb. 28 primary will be on the ballot in the April 4 general election. If one of the candidates receives more than 50% of the votes in the primary, then that candidate shall be the Mayor.
The two candidates for Alderman of the Fifth Ward who receive the highest number of votes in the primary will be placed on the ballot for the April 4 general election, even if one of those candidates receives more than 50% of the vote.

Local Electoral Board Decides to Keep All Mayoral Candidates on the Ballot
On Jan. 11, the Local Electoral Board decided to overrule all of the objections filed by Mr. Smith. In discussing the reasons for their decision, Board members talked about confusion and policies favoring ballot access. Mayor Tisdahl said, “My feeling is that none of the issues raised rise to a level serious enough to deny ballot access to candidates or to the many voters who signed petitions for those candidates.”.

Lifelong Evanston resident Carlis Sutton has announced his campaign for Alderman of the Fifth Ward. He has taught in the Chicago Public Schools system, and taught Sunday School at Second Baptist Church of Evanston, where he was ordained as a deacon in 1972.

Evanston’s Local Election Board, on Dec. 16, heard further arguments in a dispute over nominating petitions filed by candidates in Evanston’s upcoming mayoral elections, but the proceedings were delayed until the morning of Dec. 19 after City Clerk Rodney Greene, a member of the Electoral Board, became ill during the session.

New Filing Dates: Candidates for Municipal Offices May Need to File Petitions By Nov. 28
The article titled “Federal and State Elections Over, Local Campaigns on the Horizon,” published in the Nov. 17 edition of the RoundTable and posted on the RoundTable’s website, evanstonroundtable.com, may have contained erroneous information about filing dates for candidates in the upcoming municipal election. In a Nov. 23 memo to City Council, Clerk Greene wrote, “The State Board of Elections instructed this office to accept petitions from candidates who file petitions between November 21-28, 2016.”
