ETHS Boosterpalooza Celebrates Five Years
Evanston Township High School Boosters is hosting its Fifth Annual Boosterpalooza from 6 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Sherman Plaza garage rooftop, 821 Davis St.  The musical event brings people from thoughout the community together to support ETHS.

Algebra Will Be Detracked at All Middle Schools
On July 17, District 65 administrators announced that tracking of students in Algebra will be eliminated in all three middle schools starting in the 2017-18 school year.

There's No Arguing the Growing Interest, Success of the ETHS Speech and Debate Team
Evanston Township High School’s Speech and Debate team has a long, proud history. Students won the IHSA State Championship in Policy Debate as far back as 1968.  But over the past eight  years under Jeff Hannan, the team has grown in size, scope and success.

EC2C Ready to Move to Next Level
At their July 20 meeting, partners of the Evanston Cradle to Career (EC2C) initiative reviewed revised goals and strategies to achieve the goals, the need for equity and equity assessments, and the process for distributing a new $172,500 grant awarded to EC2C by the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago.

New Report Finds Race and Income Are Still Strong Predictors of Achievement, But School Effectiveness Makes a Difference
A new report, “Upstate/Downstate,” by Paul Zavitkovsky and Steven Tozer at the University of Illinois at Chicago, analyzes how changes in low-income enrollment and school effectiveness have impacted student achievement in 709 Illinois school districts in the period between 2001 and 2016.

ETHS Students and Teacher Receive History Fair Awards
Five students and a teacher from Evanston Township High School were recognized with special awards given by the Chicago Metro History Fair in June. Mattias Amezquita-Fox, Andrew Borland, Dakota Erwin, and Theodore Lambert received the Roosevelt University Center for New Deal Studies Award for Social Justice History and Flora Block received the Berrier Suburban History Award. ETHS history teacher Michael Pond is the 2017 recipient of the Arthur Andersen Award for Superior History Fair Teaching.

Impact of D65's Referendum on 2nd Installment Property Tax Bills
Under the April 4 referendum, School District 65 was able to levy an additional $14.5 million as part of its 2016 tax levy, which is paid in 2017. According to information provided by the District as part of the referendum process, a property owner who paid the average property tax bill of $8,076 in 2016 will see an increase of about $470 in property taxes in 2017.

District 65 Board De-tracks Algebra Classes
On June 12, the District 65 School Board approved a recommendation presented by administrators to eliminate tracking of students in algebra classes at Chute, Haven and Nichols middle schools by consolidating Algebra 8 into Algebra 1.  Algebra 1 will be a mixed-level class, with class sizes projected at between 25 and 29 students next year. The recommendation will be phased in at one or more schools for the 2017-18 school year, and at any remaining schools in 2018-19.

At the District 65 School Board meeting on June 5, administrators of School District 65 presented their recommendation to eliminate tracking of students in algebra classes at Chute, Haven and Nichols middle schools, and to do so on a phased in basis.

District 65 School Board Considers Equity Report/Recommendations
The report presents findings based on her equity audit of the District, together with eight recommendations that  she said are intended to take the District toward a more equitable learning environment and eliminate the predictability of achievement by race in Evanston.
