Biss Moves Up in the Polls
By Larry Gavin

A recent poll shows that State Senator Daniel Biss, candidate for Governor, has moved up from having 6% of the votes in October to 17.5% in late January, with about 38% of the voters still undecided. In recent weeks, Sen. Biss has received endorsements of Our Revolution Illinois, MoveOn.org, Reclaim Chicago, and National Nurses United.  As reported in the last issue of the RoundTable, he received the endorsement of the Democratic Party of Evanston.

Our Revolution Illinois grew out of Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential primary campaign. “For the first time in many years, working men and women have a true voice and champion in our next governor and lieutenant governor,” said spokespersons for the organization. “Daniel has been a longtime champion of increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour. He has been a longtime supporter of Medicare-for-All, because he understands that healthcare is a right and not a privilege. He has been a leader in the fight for education funding, including free tuition at public colleges and universities. And Daniel understands the need to get the State’s financial house in order by changing the tax system so that those who can most afford it will pay their fair share.”

In announcing their endorsement of Sen. Biss, spokespersons for MoveOn.org, said, “Daniel’s running on a bold vision for a massive change to Illinois politics and economy – one that puts middle-class values and families first, not the billionaires and big corporations. His support for single-payer health care, tuition-free public universities, fixing a broken criminal justice system, and making sure the wealthy pay their share is a recipe for energizing the broad coalition it’ll take to beat Bruce Rauner in the fall.”

“Daniel is not a billionaire. He worries about balancing the cost of living with saving for his children's college education, and he understands that the necessities of life are out of reach for far too many families,” said a spokesperson for Reclaim Chicago. “Daniel knows firsthand what a difference it would make in our lives to fully fund public education, to make public universities tuition-free, and to have a Medicare for All system that would free us from the financial crisis that almost always accompanies a health crisis. Daniel is already leading the fight to close corporate tax loopholes and make the very rich pay their fair share so that Illinois can afford to make these investments.”

“Nurses are proud to endorse Daniel Biss because he shares nurses’ values of caring, compassion and community,” said a spokesperson for National Nurses United. “Under Governor Rauner, our communities are in jeopardy. Daniel Biss shares our vision for an Illinois where every resident receives quality healthcare through a single payer/Medicare for All healthcare system. He rejects the notion that cuts to social services are necessary or inevitable and is committed to raising the progressive revenue that we need to fully fund and expand the services that our communities need.”

In the statewide poll conducted by We Ask America between Jan. 28 and 30, 29% of the respondents said they would vote for J.B. Pritzker if the election were conducted at the time of the survey, 17% said they would vote for Sen. Biss, 11% said they would vote for Chris Kennedy, and less than 4% said they would vote for Bob Daiber, Tio Hardiman, or Robert Marshall. Many voters, 38%, said they were undecided.

In the match-up between Sen. Biss and J.B. Pritzker, Sen. Biss led in Suburban Cook County, while Mr. Pritzker led in Chicago, the Collar Counties, and Downstate. About 36% - 40% of the voters were undecided in each region.
